DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Nine people were transported to a hospital Wednesday morning after a possible overdose incident at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey.

The Los Angeles County Probation Department says first responders were called in for a suspected overdose and possible exposure to an unknown substance.

The hazmat incident took place around 8:45 a.m. and was declared a multi-casualty incident.

The Downey Fire Department says detention center staff administered Narcan to one person before the fire department could get there. Narcan is medicine used to reverse the effects of an overdose for opioids like heroin or fentanyl.

AIR7 captured at least one person being put on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.

In all, fire officials say nine patients - a minor and eight adults - were transported to the hospital.

Nathan Martinez spent three weeks at Los Padrinos on a gun possession charge. He tried to access the facility to take a DNA swab but was denied entry.

"I'm a little concerned because I was told to come do it today, and then now we can't go inside, so I'm a little concerned what might happen with my case in the future because they're stopping me from going inside now that this hazmat situation is going on," Martinez said.

Last Wednesday, a civilian contract worker and employee of a nonprofit organization was arrested while on duty in Los Padrinos for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the facility.

The condition of the patients transported Wednesday is unknown.
