LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- As many as 20 people were injured, including at least one child, after a bus hit train tracks and overturned in the Lancaster area Wednesday morning.

The incident was reported around 11:20 a.m. at Sierra Highway and Avenue C, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

California Highway Patrol officials said a Kern Transit Bus on its way to Rosamond left the roadway, hit the nearby railroad tracks, went airborne, flipped several times and landed on the other side of the tracks.

An 8-year-old boy was said to be among the injured. Some patients were airlifted to a local trauma center and others were transported on the ground.

At least one of the injuries was said to be critical.

Authorities said the impact was so hard that it also damaged the railroad tracks, which had to be closed. Union Pacific said the damaged tracks have been repaired, inspected and reopened as of Wednesday night.

According to CHP, between 20-40 passengers were on board at the time of the crash.

No further details were immediately known. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
